What Working Parents Do When Kids are Sick

Sickness stinks any time of the year, but especially during the holiday rush. With upcoming holidays and vacation days already approved, there is precious little time left in December for any kind of wrench in the plans.

But there seems to be a lot of wrench throwing going on around here lately. Fortunately, my house has escaped the flu and strep this month (so far!), but we have all had a touch of something over the last few weeks.

When I was sick, I did my best to push through. I laughed because my Fit Bit showed I still had over 7,000 steps on my sickest day. That’s the mom life, for sure.

When Husband was sick, he also pushed through, still going to work and helping with house and kid duties.

However, The Boy has been sick for the last few days, and it’s overwhelming to try to balance all of the work and home duties at the same time. Sometimes I think that our flexible work schedules that makes these experiences even more frustrating for our family.

Because we’re able to, we try to still try to fit in an entire work day plus the doctor’s appointment, prescription pick-up (and the drive across town to the other pharmacy because your regular pharmacy did not have the prescription in stock), and all of the holding and cuddling a sick kiddo needs.

We’re both very blessed to have the flexibility in our work day, and I know I’m blessed with to have a husband who shares all of the responsibilities with the kids. But sometimes I wish we had less flex time so that we’d be forced to take a personal day and be able to focused entirely on just one thing at a time.

What do you do when your kids are sick? Do you take time off? Do you try to balance it all?
